Bush calls for undermining America
So our appointed President wants to pass a constitutional amendment to ban 'gay' marriage. He should ban 55 hour Vegas publicity stunt marriages instead. He'd do more to help the fabric of American society.
Amendments to the Constitution have traditionally clarified the governmental system, such as the 25th Amendment which clarifies the succession of the Presidency, or they have empowered the people rights, such as the 15th, 19th, 24th, and 26th Amendments which clarifies all ways the state cannot deny people the right to vote.
The 18th Amendment, declaring sales and transportation of Alcohom illegal, was determined to be illegal to useless and repealed by the 21st Amendment.
Bush's proposal isn't in the spirit of Amending the Constitution. Neither was the 'Anti-Flag-Burning' Amendment that his father proposed. Both are mean-spirited and an attempt to limit the rights of people.
In his speech this morning, Bush marginalized the people who support Gay Marriage. I want Gay couples to have all of the rights and responsibilities that I do in my marriage. Do I want to let them call it marriage? No. I can't give up the word, but I want them to legally be considered the same.
Bush is calling for 'civil' debate and opens the debate by calling the courts 'activist', which doesn't have the positive connotations it once used to.
Now I do agree that the marriage licences being distributed in San Fancisco are possible invalid. A city does not have the authority to approve marriages, I think that's a county or state level issue. I do applaud what's going on, and I'd like to see a follow up study of the couples that have been married over the past week to find out how many have split up or filed for divorce. Check in next year, lets see if the word marriage can have the same effect it has in heterosexual couples. How many heterosexual marriages fail? Where's the outrage? It's not there because it doesn't threaten the establishment.
Of course, for some legal trickery Bush is not pushing to "Ban Gay Marriage." The language used would define marriage as between "Husband and Wife." I guess I know a few women who will happily call themselves 'Husband' and a few men who will legally refer to themselves as 'Wife.'
