Propaganda

I think I am upset. Today in the mail we got several bits of political propaganda. It's not surprising but I looked at it instead of throwing it away. The first thing that pissed me off is a mailing from the Yes on 35 campaign sent their propaganda to look like the official Voters Guide that we get here in Oregon. In the real voters guide there are explanations and arguments for and against each measure. There is no voice of opposition in this drudge and the only way to tell that it is from the Yes On Five people and not the Secretary of State's office is the return postmark.

That was just the warm up. Oregonians also suffer from an abomination called Measure 36, which would define marriage as a union between only one man and only one woman. There was a lot of hoopla back in February or so about four Multnomah County commisioners allowing same sex marriage liscenses to be sold. I recieved propaganda from the 'Yes on 36' and the 'No on 36' people in one day.

The 'Defense of Marriage' idiots make two faulty claims in their propaganda:

...it was discovered that children who live with both a mother and father were more likely to have finished high school, become economically self-sufficient and develop healthy lifestyles.

Than what? I ask. I also ask for a citation of the study, which was not included. I also want to know if they were comparing children of 'traditional' marriage to children of same-sex marriages or children of single parent families. I suspect single parent families were the true comparison.

The next big lie states that "Defining marriage will not take away anyone's being in a committed relationships or take away anybody's rights." According the 'No on 36' crowd, there are around 1,000 rights that come automatically with marriage that cannot be guaranteed through contracts or legal hoop-jumping. The big ones appear to be the right to make health care decisions and visit a spouse in the hospital. I honestly don't know all of the rights and responisibilites that come with marriage. I take a lot of things for granted (legally) in my marriage. I don't know how hard it would be to recreate all of these rights for same sex couples. It would probably 'cost millions of dollars and take thousands of lives.'

I really don't mind getting propaganda, I just wish it wasn't so decietful.
