Fundamentalism
Every time I read a book on the history of religious ideas, such as Karen Armstrong's The Battle for God or Elaine Pagel's The Gnostic Gospels I desperately want to stand up and fight close-mindedness in the name of God. I am constatnly amazed at how much hatred gets spread because of religion. For example, I have never seen a story about the Scopes 'Monkey' trial that portrayed Byron or his supporters in a positive way. I'm sure the fundamentalists have a different take on the story, but the best moderate stance I can take is that the fundies fought their battle in the wrong way. They shouldn't have done it in court, and the certainly should have chosed a better spokesperson for their cause.
Anyway, it makes me want to stand up and fight, but I'm not the right person to wage a public war for rational religion.
