Extreme Black and White

Go read this Media Matters article:Perkins accused opponents of Bush's judicial picks of anti-Christian bigotry. American politics has degraded to a severe "Us vs. Them" mentality, where the enemy is not only Osama and Saddam, but Americans who disagree with Bush's policy of creating concentration camps. Now they're preparing for the 2006 election by calling it a war of God vs. Satan. They're not calling Democrats Satanic. Okay, maybe Ann Coulter is, but it isn't a popular thought, but since the Rublicans are aligning themselves with God ("See, we've got God right here in our pockets," they claim) then the only logical conclusion is that Dems are aligning with Satan.
Sure, they use the word "secular" but to many right-wing-evangelical Christians, secular and satanism are the same things. It's only a matter of degree. A satanist, according to their warped definitions, follows Satan willingly. A secularist has been fooled by Satan into believing that there is no Satan, therefore there is no God.
The limitation on our thoughts that we can only be in one of two camps is anti-American. Right now it's an all or nothing agreement. If you agree with 90% of what this administration has done but voice an opposing opinion on one topic, you are a traitor. You must be silenced and not allowed to participate in our government.
The problem is, you see, that God is very, very liberal. God is generous. God created the universe and called it Good. God gave us our gifts. God does not tell us what to do with our gifts, God gives freely. God wants only two things out of us: Love God. Love each other.
If the Republicans want to go this route, openly calling for ruling by Fundamentalist Christian law, then I think we can easily describe them as being under the influence of Satan. Nowhere in Christian texts do prophets get a clear message from God. Okay, there are a few, but the prophets who get that message challenge God. The rest of God's messages are not so clear. God is subtle.
I compare it to the great television show Joan of Arcadia. They're building up for a battle between Good and Evil. Not the final battle, but a battle. Evil has gathered worldly powers and is over confident. Good is frustrated, confused, feels weak, and has no confidence in her abilities, but she knows that God is on her side, and she is on God's side.
Who do you think will win?
