Culture and Politics

So this week we saw Condi Rice order most of the countries in the middle east to become democracies. The Bush administration needs to realize that political structures, like religions, are cultural phenomena. We can't create democracy in a culture that doesn't act like a democracy any more than we can convert every Iraqi citizen to Christianity. I don't think she ordered Saudi Arabia to covert to democracy, despite the fact that Saudi Arabia still does not support equal rights for all citizens and 15 of the 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia.
