CNN.com - George W.'s problem - Jun 9, 2005
I think what struck me was a Robert Novak column entitled George W.'s problem (on cnn.com). I was trying to research otherissues when I read this, and decided to read it. I know full well that Robert Novak should be on trial for treason over endangering the life of a CIA oeprative, and thus everything he says can be suspect. This article, however, surprises me.
Novak lists some of the things that Congress has done that Bush has told them not to do. On one hand Novak assumes that Bush should have some control, if not total control (Novak doesn't specify), of Congress. ON the other, he demonstrates that Bush has not taken charge, and his wishes are not being met with blink obedience. That's a good thing. Some points:
Novak surprises me. Here is authentic criticism from the right wing. Every time I see him on Crossfire he's just being a petulant and beligerant ass. His writing here has promise.

On one hand Novak assumes that Bush should have some control, if not total control (Novak doesn't specify), of Congress. ON the other, he demonstrates that Bush has not taken charge, and his wishes are not being met with blink obedience. That's a good thing. Some points:
- The House passed a stem cell research funding bill marked by Bush for his first veto after GOP leaders made a deal with liberals to bring the measure to the floor in return for their votes on the budget.
- Good for the House. I'm not sure about stem cell research myself, but just putting down the presidential foot and saying 'No!' in a loud voice is not a responsible response to the issue of stem cell research.
- Senior Republican senators cut a deal on judicial confirmations that threw overboard at least two of the president's nominees.
- Bush has no reason to complain about his nominees being blocked. He's had one of the highest success rates of any president in getting nominees confirmed.
- The president's top legislative priority, Social Security reform, is becalmed. What the president wants cannot pass either chamber of Congress.
- The president's ideas for Social Security reform are irresponsible. Wal-Mart has a better idea of Social Security than Bush, and Wal-Marts care for its employees is criminal.
Novak surprises me. Here is authentic criticism from the right wing. Every time I see him on Crossfire he's just being a petulant and beligerant ass. His writing here has promise.
